Invest in Yourself

Invest in yourself by learning how to help others and help yourself.

Abu Hurayrah narrated: While a man was in the wilderness, he heard a voice from a cloud, commanding: “Irrigate the garden of so-and-so.” After that, the clouds slinked aside and poured water on a stony ground. The water filled a channel amongst the channels of the land, and that man followed the flow of the water until he found another man standing in a garden who was busy with changing the course of the water with a tool. The first man said to the second, “Oh slave of Allah, what is your name?” The second man responded, “So-and-so.” And this was the very same name the first man had heard from the clouds. The second man asked, “Oh slave of Allah, why do you ask me my name?” The first man responded, “I heard a voice from the clouds, from which this downpour originated, saying, ‘Water the garden of so-and-so’, like your name. What do you do for the favor of Allah to be shown to you in this matter?” The second man said, “Now as you see. I look at the yield I get from the land, and I give one-third as charity out of it, I and my children eat one-third of it, and the remaining third I return to it as an investment.” – as narrated in Sahih Muslim (42: 7112)

Find your purpose and responsibility

Find your purpose and responsibility to yourself and to the world, and take steps to fulfilling that obligation.

Take heed. Every one of you is a shepherd and every one is answerable with regard to his flock. The Caliph is a shepherd over the people and shall be questioned about his subjects as to how he conducted their affairs. A man is a guardian over the members of his family and shal be questioned about them as to how he looked after their physical, emotional, and moral well-being. A woman is a guardian over the household of her husband and his children and shall be questioned about them as to how she managed the household and brought up the children. A slave is a guardian over the property of his master and shall be questioned about it as to how he safeguarded his trust. Consider this a word of caution, every one of you is a guardian and every one of you shall be questioned with regard to his trust. – Prophet Muhammed, as narrated in Sahih Muslim (20:4496)
